Great Ocean Road

Driving along the Great Ocean Road with the smell of eucalyptus in the air and Koalas munching on the leaves-so great!
We rented a car in Melbourne for our 4 day journey on the GOR and landed in a small, relaxed village for a few nights as our base to explore the sights. When we weren't navigated the winding roads around the ocean cliffs, we were stopping to spot the koala's and kangaroos, and rolling down the windows to take in the glorious smells of the thousands of eucalyptus trees. Here's a few photos of our many adventures on the Great Ocean Road.

The twelve apostles
From high above and towering below, we stepped off the GOR for a closer view of these spectacular rock formations curved out from the millions of years of ocean waves crashing against them.

Loch Ard GorgeStanding on top of the cliff, we were amazed at the sheer size of the cliffs and the narrow opening out to sea at the Loch Ard Gorge. The crashing waves put on quite a show!

Bay of MartyrsA great place to see the stunning rock stacks of the Bay of Islands nearby.

London BridgeOriginally a natural archway and tunnel in an offshore rock formation, however, it collapsed in 1990 and became a bridge without a middle. Two people were strained for 2 hours on the remaining bridge before the helicopter rescued them. Could you imagine?

The GrottoThis geological formation created was when sinkholes in the limestone cliffs met with a receding cliff line.

Signs, signs, everywhere are signs! Aussie's want to make sure you're clear about what to do while in their country. I think the cliff ones were pretty helpful?

Ummm...

Taking a drive towards the Otway Lighthouse off the GOR gave us an opportunity to have a closer look at the koala bears-mainly sleeping and munching on the eucalyptus trees.

This is what happens when the koalas are spotted!
Near accidents-lol

Not sure if this is a result of the koalas eating their way through the Otway forests or a result of the two year drought Australia has been experiencing:(

We made this our base for the Great Ocean Road drives.

Torquey and Bells Beach
One night spent here allowed us the walk the miles of beach line checking out the skills of the hundreds of surfers who frequent these beaches every year.

  2. Agreed! Hope you continue to have safe and happy trails-we leave for Dallas on Wednesday-won't be as much fun as the two of you are having, but better then the winter we have in London. Cheers.
